EL PASO, Texas -- The Vinton Police Department is using new cutting edge technology to offer better protection.

Two years ago, the Vinton Police Department implemented a new system known as COPsync.

COPsync connects law enforcement agencies nationwide and allows officers to send instant alerts about child kidnappings, robberies, car thefts, police pursuits and other crimes in progress.

Vinton Police Chief Klaus Mansion said the improvements from the system have been tremendous.

"Our officer time on a traffic stop has been reduced, the accuracy of citations have been increased," said Mansion.

In Texas, there are at least 500 law enforcement agencies that have implemented the new system. However, Vinton is the only law enforcement agency in El Paso County that has implemented the system.

COPsync CEO Ronald Woessner said the system can help police track down those crucial details, that aren't always listed when other agencies who don't have COPsync simply run a person's identification.

"What we're talking about is providing officers with the information about whether this person is a known associate of a gang member or are they known to carry a gun in their boot," Woessner said.

Woessner reiterated how dangerous the job of a law enforcement officer is and how this new system can help save a life.

"A law enforcement officer traffic stop is the only job in the U.S. where the officer does not know whether the incident is going to end with handing someone a ticket saying 'havea nice day,' or whether they're going to end with the officer being shot and lying on the ground," Woessner said.

In August, 2000, DPS Trooper Randy Vetter stopped a man in Hayes County for not wearing his seat belt. The DPS trooper did not know that the man he pulled over had allegedly said to another cop in the past that he would kill the next cop who pulled him over.

"The trooper made the traffic stop, and he was killed by this person who was a known threat to law enforcement," Woessner said.

Fifteen years later, officials with COPsync said they just hope more law enforcement agencies across the U.S. catch on, so that more lives can potentially be saved.

"The 21st century COPsync tools, help keep law enforcement officers, safer and it helps them do what they do best, which is protect and serve," Woessner said.
